The Realm of Contingency refers to the domain in which contingent beings exist — those whose existence or nonexistence are both possible. It is the realm that lies beneath the station of “Qāba Qawsayn” (“the distance of two bows’ length or nearer”), that is, below the sphere of pure Divine proximity.

“… in one respect, the Reality of Ahmad—and, in its eternal aspect, the Reality of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him)—is a transcendent truth that occupies a point between necessity (wujub) and contingency (imkan), as hinted at in the verse, ‘Qaba Qawsayn aw Adna’ (‘two bows’ length or even nearer’) (An-Najm, 53:9). The manifestation of this reality served as the very cause for the existence of the Realm of Contingency itself. It is a manifestation of Divine knowledge, born of love—a ‘scientific,’ that is, intelligible determination (ta‘ayyun), which became the origin and source for all subsequent manifestations and determinations at every level of existence.”¹⁾

“… since the degrees of perfection are infinite, and the potential and capacity within his soul are boundless—and since, beyond his inward reality, the countless causes of development that flow from his community are also limitless—the people of spiritual unveiling (ahl al-kashf) have unanimously agreed that the Reality of Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the most established and preeminent reality within the Realm of Contingency.”²⁾
