The Luminous Riders

  • “… under the guidance of the luminous riders, strung taut with determination and faith, society—by its heart—became a lyrical offering to the highest ideals; by its spirit, it quivered like a string that has felt the plectrum’s edge. Its gaze was always fixed upon the land where the sun rises, and upon its lips the songs of reunion took wing and flew forth.”1)
  • “… even under the threat of raids, ambushes, and the ever-looming possibility of attack, the luminous riders never ceased gathering around the light, exchanging it, drawing breath from it, tightening themselves with it, or sending its radiance into the very breast of darkness. Yet I wonder: will it ever be possible to convey to today’s generations the blindness and deafness of that era, the trials and torments endured in that world of the blind and the deaf, and—above all—the superlative spiritual delights experienced by true believers at that time?”2)
  • “… by nature, these luminous riders once seemed occupied solely with illuminating their own circles. But now, bringing their profound depths and spiritual strength to the fore, they are like rain-laden clouds: pouring joy and gladness, hope and love, drenching parched hearts hungry for compassion, and stirring within them the fervor to turn every dry soul into a garden of Paradise.”3)
  • “In an age when the world had succumbed to darkness, our horizon was always veiled in color, and one dawn after another broke in a feast of light. Full-tilt, the luminous riders rode with blazing torches in hand, calling people to resurrection wherever they passed. Those who encountered them felt as though touched by the breath of Christ, and places they traversed sprang to life as if blessed by Khidr. One eye on this world, the other on the Hereafter, these enchanted faces turned ever toward Truth amid the crowds—minds and hearts hand in hand on this earthly adventure—sometimes here, sometimes beyond, living each day a new epiphany of that magical journey.”4)
  • “O Innocent Prophet! As you appeared fourteen centuries ago, so appear once more. As you lit up the dark world of the Arabs, so visit now the clime of this noble and distinguished nation that for nine centuries has served your faith and borne the standard of this sacred duty. Pray spur your mount and come to our land! Believe that the luminous riders you inspire will never abandon you. One single glance or smile from you will suffice to galvanize them wholly into your service.”5)
