Doubt
- “Confirmation and acceptance are deliberate, for they depend on certain criteria and intentional reasoning. In addition, just as the former are not the same mental activities as confirmation and acceptance, neither are they the same as doubt and hesitation. However, they may pave the way to doubt if they are repeated unnecessarily and become established. If people continually support the opposing side on the pretext of objective reasoning or fairness, they may favor it involuntarily and thereby fall into danger. Gradually their state of mind becomes fixed and they become officious advocates of Satan or the enemy.”1)
- “… this Mercy Which embraces this world and the Hereafter with all they contain must without doubt be a particular manifestation of God’s Oneness within the overall manifestation of His Unity.”2)
- “‘Knowledge’ comes before ‘spiritual state’ (hal), for such a state is entirely dependent on knowledge. In fact, knowledge is the inheritance of the Prophets, and scholars are the heirs of this prophetic legacy… Knowledge is an important step toward faith—a solid touchstone that separates guidance from misguidance, doubt from certainty, and a divine mystery that brings out what is truly human in a person.”3)
- “God Almighty, by declaring لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ—‘No kind of doubt whatsoever has any place in the Noble Qur’an’—calls both them and us to reflection, contemplation, and vigilant wakefulness against such satanic thoughts.”4)
- “If there are delusions, doubts, and hesitations in people’s minds, removing them is a requirement of mercy and compassion toward believers. For this reason, one must be extremely careful and sensitive—not to give others grounds for suspicion, not to push them into envy, and not to stir up the nerves of jealousy or rivalry.”5)
- “Among people devoted to the same ideal, it must not be forgotten that goodwill and trust are essential foundations; and that brothers should never lose trust in one another because of reports not grounded in certainty, trivial excuses, or various doubts and whisperings. Any tendency toward ‘lack of trust’ must be kept under strict restraint.”6)
- “ʿIlm al-yaqin (certainty based on knowledge) means: analyzing things and events under the illuminating spectrum of knowledge; extracting, through reflection, the wisdom and meaning of the creational commands; and thereby attaining a level of gnosis by which one can prove the truths of faith with evidence and argument. Reading, studying, analyzing, and synthesizing in this way protects what is gained through imitation—sheltering it like a greenhouse against the doubts, hesitations, and whisperings that the people of unbelief may cast.”7)
