Firasa—a word that carries meanings like ‘discernment,’ ‘intuition,’ and ‘foresight’—refers to a person’s ability to make an accurate judgment about someone’s morals and character simply by looking at their outward appearance.¹⁾

“Discernment (firasa) denotes the deepening of insight when perception becomes a source of certain knowledge. Those who discern the manifestations of the light of God, the Ultimate Truth, possess such a radiance that they see everything, every issue, in its full clarity. They are never confused, even when encountering the most intricate elements, elements that are extremely similar, and do not become lost in particularities. Simultaneously seeing the sugar contained within the sugarcane and the hydrogen and oxygen contained within the water molecule, they refrain from all deviations (e.g., pantheism and monism) and recognize the Creator as He is, and the created as it is.”²⁾

“Discernment (firasa)—which you could also describe as richness of imagination, consistency of thought, insight into what lies behind the veil of existence, and acting with clear-sighted discernment—is a light that God places within a person when they cleanse their heart of spiritual illnesses such as rancor, hatred, resentment, hypocrisy, and self-admiration, and adorn it with faith, deep knowledge of God, love, and passionate longing. Whoever is graced with it becomes truly distinctive, grows deeper in perception and intuition, may even become familiar with the secrets within other people’s hearts, and can see the realities behind faces. And of course, to the extent that they awaken to what lies behind the veil of things, they may also become a clear mirror reflecting the All-Knowing One.”³⁾

“Discernment (firasa) becomes stronger and sharper in proportion to the inner depth of one’s faith and the vastness of one’s certainty. Indeed, through certain special divine favors, it can appear within a person’s spiritual insight as the very manifestation of God’s gaze. The experiences and sayings surrounding firasa show that this happens quite often—and that what is described is not exaggeration or empty claim.”⁴⁾

“In the future, those who set out to write the history of service to religion will look for its explanation in certain people’s learning, spiritual insight, genius, discernment (firasa), and shrewd judgment. But even now, I proclaim at the top of my lungs: anyone who interprets the developments on the path of faith and the Qur’an in that way is making a very serious mistake. In truth, we are people living in an age ruled by God’s grace. If those who will write the history of this era in the future could see the reality of it, they would call it: ‘the age when the Lord’s bounties poured down in torrents.’”⁵⁾
