Dew Drop (Rashha)

  • A clear seep, a pure trickle, a moisture-drop, a limpid droplet — used metaphorically for a transparent, colorless “medium” that doesn’t display itself, but reflects what appears in it with maximum clarity (“rashha” in Arabic).
  • The title of the monthly magazine Sızıntı, published by the Hizmet Movement between 1979 and 2016, is inspired by the Turkish word “reşha” (a clear seep).
  • “Let that poor fellow who knows everything to be directly from Almighty God, and who considers cause and effect to be a veil, be the dew drop. A dew drop is poor in itself and has nothing to depend on. It does not rely on itself, as flowers do. It has no color through which to display itself, or anything else toward which it should feel inclined. All it has is a sheer purity and simplicity of heart, by which it holds the sun’s image in the ‘pupil of its eye.’”1)
  • “Our third friend, the dew drop, is both poor and colorless. It swiftly evaporates in the sun’s heat and, free of egotism, rises into the air. The dense matter in its structure burns in the flames of love and changes into light. It holds on to a ray from the sun’s light and draws close to the sun. O friend resembling the dew drop! Since you act as a direct mirror to the sun, whatever your rank, you can find a window through which you can look at it without any barrier. You will experience no difficulty in ascribing the sun’s amazing works to it; You will immediately attribute its deserved majestic attributes and the awesome actions of its essential dominion to it. Neither the thickness of barriers, nor the restrictedness of capacities, nor the smallness of mirrors will confuse you or drive you to any falsehood. Since you are turned directly toward it with a pure heart and a sincere intention, you understand that what appears in the objects and mirrors is not the sun itself, but rather its manifestations or colored reflections. Although these reflections describe it, they cannot display all of its majesty’s works in their proper splendor.”2)
  • “Indeed, just as every human being has a capacity to love the All-favor, the All-Majestic Creator has a greater right than everybody else to be infinitely loved. It can even be said that all the varieties of love and intense attachment a believing person has for their life, subsistence, and existence, and for their world and self, and for all creatures, are in fact manifestations of this capacity. More than that, the various intense emotions of humans are reflections (rashhas) of that capacity which have taken on different forms.”3)
  • “For example, in you there is a sensory capacity that can lead to profound spiritual depth at the highest level. However, you need to strengthen it with practice so that it becomes useful. Yes, they will not keep you long at the door; they will seat you either at the post or on the throne. Moreover, the throne will be according to your capacity. Yes, if you are a drop, you will be seated at the station of a drop; if a dew drop, at the station of a dew drop; if a flower, at the station of a flower. In other words, even if feelings are purely of the heart, they must integrate with practice and experience. This is possible only through service to faith and Islam and putting them into practice.”4)
  • “There is also scholarly wonder, which is the miracle granted by Almighty God for the knowledge to be known, evaluated, and benefited from. Imams like Ghazali, Rabbani, Mawlana Khalid, Shah Waliullah Dehlawi, and Bediüzzaman are those who have been granted this miracle. God has bestowed upon them such a scholarly miracle that they are considered the true heirs of the first ones we call the respected Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali. Yes, they cannot be exactly like them, because their positions were special. They received lessons from a unique pulpit of instruction and were direct witnesses to the revelation of the Qur’an. Because their pure and clean souls were not influenced by other currents, their representation of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, without defect manifested as a miracle in them. Their minds were not afflicted by any philosophical movements like naturalism, socialism, liberalism, capitalism… And therefore their intellects were like a dew drop. The truths flowing into them preserved their own characteristics and could manifest in them as they were—and they did. For this reason, we call this scholarly miracle, which is the greatest of all miracles.”5)
  • “Some, binding all their considerations to the truth of ‘Poverty is my pride’6) assuming the nature of a dew drop and striving to feel it in their pupil, have lived with dreams of Divine company.”7)
  • “The Divine Names that a person recites as a litany for progress have much to do with his essence, capacity, true identity, and the colors placed in his essence by God. For example, no matter how much I desire, it is not possible for me to reach another’s level. Because he is a person directly open, without barrier, to the pure Divine Names, Divine Attributes, and the acts of Lordship, and he rises toward God as if mounted on a pedestal. This truth is expressed in the issues of zühre, (flower) katre, (drop) and reşha (dew drop) in the Twenty-Fourth Word. Even if the zühre is torn, spilled, and fragmented, it cannot change its relationship with the sun. Because the sun makes itself felt in it by transforming in its colors. Likewise, no matter what the drop does, it cannot attain the relationship with the sun that a dew drop has. Because it is a body, and only the pupil can take it inside.”8)
  • “Prophethood, in terms of inner equipment, is a Divine gift, a bestowal to souls that are like a dew drop—suitable to reflect it without defect in essence—alongside a sound conscience where every pillar is directed toward its own purpose of existence (we can also call this fully developed), a sound natural disposition, and a straight nature; and the Messenger of God is the special representative of this sacred gift and bestowal.”9)
  • “The natural dispositions of the Prophets are pure, their souls are exalted, their wills are firm, and their hearts are sparkling. The manifestations coming from God (Glorified and Exalted is He) crystallize in them in the manner they come, and are seen and perceived with their own dimensions. They are like a clear seep, a dew drop that reflects and mirrors the rays of the sun exactly; in their hearts there is no refraction of light or transformation of color!”10)
